Eco-friendly and sustainable brands at DesignLife

If the recent October heatwave is making you feel slightly alarmed, you’re not alone. There are a few things we as individuals can do to reduce our impact on the climate and the environment. Choosing sustainable products is one of those things, so we at DesignLife decided to have a closer look at what our vendors are doing to protect our planet. Here’s what we found.

Industville

If you love the industrial style, lighting by Industville is a must-have. Their products are made from the highest quality materials, and hand-finished to maintain that true authentic vintage feel.

Industville ensures their products are as environmentally friendly as possible by using 100% recycled metals and glass in all products. Furthermore, they are working hard to ensure that by the end of 2022 all of their packaging is made of recyclable or biodegradable materials, and they are eliminating the use of plastic tape and polystyrene from their supply chain.

The customer benefits too as their products are made to last, so you won’t have to replace your Industville fixtures and lightbulbs anytime soon!

If Industrial is what you’re going for, have a look at Industville’s beautiful range below.

Lochcarron of Scotland

If you couldn’t tell yet by browsing through their wonderful range of blankets and throws, Lochcarron is the worlds leading manufacturer of tartan. Their heritage dates all the way back to 1892. They make wonderful kilts and other fashion pieces, but here at DesignLife it is their timeless blankets that steal the show. With winter coming up you may be looking for an environment-friendly way to keep warm, so here’s what we found out about Lochcarron.

Lochcarron works almost exclusively with wool and other natural fibres. This means their products are more durable and often passed on from generation to generation. On top of that they are biodegradable, decomposing in a matter of years, and can be recycled easily.

They also aim to source their materials locally as much as possible, reducing transportation distances, and up to a quarter of their yarn is now of British origin. They recently converted one of their top-selling fabrics to being sourced from within the UK.

Any fabric remnants are being used in the making of accessories, donated for crafting purposes or recycled, so as little as possible ends up being thrown away.

And finally, Lochcarron have been working to eliminate plastic from their packaging by the end of 2022. Their new packaging is made using renewable wood fibres, water-based ink and water-based glue. It can be recycled along with paper and cardboard.

There is no need to feel guilty when wrapping up warm in one of their blankets this winter. Shop their range below.

Magis

None of our vendors is quite like Magis when it comes to originality, creativity and standing out. Any Magis product in your home is sure to be a conversation piece. Magis is bold, colourful, modern. But are their products sustainable?

Magis’ products are timeless and designed to stay with us for a very long time. They were not made to be treated as disposables. For Magis, a good product should last. That, to them, is sustainability.

Magis takes it one step further though. They are not your average furniture manufacturer. Magis since the early 2000’s have been fighting against what they call “the dictatorship of plastic”, and they are doing this with research into recyclable, biodegradable and non-toxic materials. They are also choosing to use new technologies that reduce waste, use less materials and focus on greener design.

While they were one of the first companies to look for real alternatives to plastic, Magis do note that good quality plastic, even if it doesn’t come from post-consumer waste, is not only recyclable but can last for many years, reducing short-term environmental impact.

And if you’re really into certificates, Magis are an ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 certified company. Their products have passed European testing and they have attained several international certifications (e.g. TÜV SÜD quality mark, FSC certification and GreenGuard Gold certification).

So do they pass the test? Magis certainly are an interesting and inventive business worth checking out.
